Is ReefLog free to use?

Yes! ReefLog is completely free to use. You can track unlimited tanks, log water parameters, manage your livestock inventory, and access all educational resources at no cost.

What water parameters can I track with ReefLog?

ReefLog lets you track all essential reef tank parameters including temperature, salinity, pH, alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and ammonia. You can also log ICP test results and track trends over time.

How do I diagnose fish diseases with ReefLog?

ReefLog includes a comprehensive fish disease guide with a symptom checker. Select the symptoms your fish is displaying, and the app will suggest possible diseases along with recommended treatments from trusted brands like Fritz Aquatics.

What is the ideal alkalinity for a reef tank?

The ideal alkalinity for a reef tank is between 7-11 dKH, with 8-9 dKH being optimal for most SPS and LPS corals. ReefLog helps you track alkalinity trends and alerts you when levels fall outside the ideal range.

How often should I do water changes on my reef tank?

Most reef tanks benefit from 10-20% water changes weekly or bi-weekly. ReefLog's water change planner helps you schedule changes based on your tank size and bioload, and tracks the salt and water you'll need.

What calcium level should a reef tank have?

Reef tanks should maintain calcium levels between 400-450 ppm for healthy coral growth. ReefLog tracks your calcium levels over time and helps you calculate proper dosing amounts.

How do I know if my fish has ich (white spot disease)?

Marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) appears as small white spots on fins and body, along with scratching, rapid breathing, and loss of appetite. Use ReefLog's fish disease guide to identify symptoms and find treatment options including copper-based medications and tank transfer method.

Can I use ReefLog on my phone?

Yes! ReefLog is fully mobile-responsive and works great on phones and tablets. You can log water parameters, check on your livestock, and manage your tank from anywhere.

How do I cycle a new reef tank?

Cycling a reef tank takes 4-8 weeks. Add an ammonia source, test daily for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite reach zero while nitrate is present. ReefLog's cycling tracker guides you through each step and monitors your progress.

What is the best free aquarium tracking app?

ReefLog is a top-rated free aquarium tracking app specifically built for reef tanks. It offers cloud sync across unlimited devices, parameter logging, trend charts, fish disease diagnosis, coral care guides, and community features - all completely free.

What magnesium level is correct for a reef tank?

Reef tanks need magnesium levels between 1250-1350 ppm for healthy coral growth. Magnesium works closely with calcium and alkalinity - low magnesium makes it harder to maintain stable calcium and alk levels. ReefLog tracks all three parameters and flags imbalances.

How do I treat velvet (Amyloodinium) in saltwater fish?

Marine velvet is a parasitic disease that presents as a fine gold or rust-colored dust on fish, rapid breathing, and scratching. It is highly contagious and often fatal if untreated. Treatment options include copper-based medications in a hospital tank, hyposalinity, or chloroquine phosphate. ReefLog's disease guide walks you through each treatment step.

What is the ideal salinity for a reef tank?

The ideal specific gravity for a reef tank is 1.025-1.026, which equals approximately 35 ppt salinity. Fish-only tanks can tolerate 1.020-1.025. ReefLog lets you log salinity at every water test and charts your stability over time.

What does two-part dosing mean for reef tanks?

Two-part dosing means adding two separate solutions - Part A (sodium bicarbonate/carbonate to raise alkalinity) and Part B (calcium chloride to raise calcium) - in equal amounts to maintain reef chemistry. ReefLog's dosing calculator helps you figure out exactly how much to dose based on your tank volume and current parameter readings.

How do I keep nitrates low in a reef tank?

Keep reef tank nitrates below 5-10 ppm by doing regular water changes, running a refugium with chaeto algae, using a quality protein skimmer, avoiding overfeeding, and maintaining a healthy sandbed. ReefLog tracks your nitrate trends so you can see if changes you make are actually working.

What is the tank transfer method for treating ich?

The tank transfer method (TTM) treats ich without medication by moving fish between two clean tanks every 72 hours, starving the parasite of its host. The fish are moved 4-5 times over 14 days. ReefLog's quarantine tracker helps you schedule each transfer and log observations throughout the process.

Can I keep an anemone with clownfish in a reef tank?

Yes, clownfish and host anemones like Bubble Tip Anemones (BTA), Magnificent Sea Anemones, and Carpet Anemones can be kept together. However, anemones need stable, mature tanks with strong lighting and pristine water quality. Use ReefLog's fish and coral compatibility checker to verify which species work together.

What is RODI water and why do reef tanks need it?

RODI (Reverse Osmosis Deionized) water has had virtually all dissolved solids, chlorine, and contaminants removed. Reef tanks need RODI water because tap water contains phosphates, nitrates, silicates, and chloramines that fuel algae growth and harm corals. Always use RODI water for top-off and water changes in reef tanks.

How do I set up a quarantine tank for new saltwater fish?

Set up a bare-bottom hospital tank of at least 10-20 gallons with a heater, sponge filter (pre-seeded in your display tank), and a PVC pipe for hiding. Quarantine new fish for 4-6 weeks before adding them to your display tank. ReefLog's quarantine tracker records observations, treatments, and lets you know when it's safe to transfer fish.
